STUDENTS VISIT G&S

Students from the environmental club at the Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School (RKYHS) visited G&S Technologies on February 15th as part of their community education program to learn about environmental issues and the responsible use of the earth’s resources.

Two former students and now G&S employees, Michael and Jonathan Lefkovits took them on the tour.

“Jonathan and I can relate to these students having been in the same position not long ago,” said Michael.  “A tour like this shows students there are great companies to work for that are environmentally positive examples here in our community.”

G&S is committed to the safe, environmentally responsible testing, removal, transportation and processing of transformers and other oil-filled electrical equipment.  Nearly 100 percent of the material processed today is salvaged for beneficial re-use rather than landfilled.

Jonathan Lefkovits added, “RKYHS students are encouraged to get involved in their community.  Providing students with the opportunity to visit G&S is a great way to get them thinking about the type of career that may be a good fit for them.”

The students first met members of the management team to learn about what the company does, the environmental aspects of the company (PCB regulations, recycling, and sustainability) and safety training. They went on to the G&S lab to learn how the company tests oil samples and the process for properly handling materials in an environmentally safe manner.  Jay Spector, G&S’ in house counsel and environmental specialist reviewed regulatory compliance, permits, laws and how regulations have changed over time.

Then with hard hats, safety vests and safety glasses on, they went for a tour of the plant to see how the transformers are systematically dismantled.  The tops and bushings are removed, oil is drained and bulked in tanks, the core, coil, and windings are disassembled.  G&S recycles almost 100% of what comes through the door into metals and oil that will be repurposed into other products.

“G&S is proud to welcome the students from RKYHS,” said Jeffrey Lefkovits.  “We think it is great the school looks to create a sense of responsibility for our natural resources and our community.”
